Hanoi (VNA) - The model “Coastguards support fishermen” has helped the Vietnam Coast Guard and other forceseffectively perform patrols and inspections of the law enforcement at sea,heard a press conference in Hanoi on July 3.
During the event, hosted by the Ministry of Defence, representatives from the HighCommand of the Vietnam Coast Guard informed participants about prominentachievements made by the force in the fight against smuggling and trade fraud, andgave more details of the model.
Over the last two decades, the Vietnam Coast Guard has made significant developmentsteps, affirming its role as a specialised and core force in protecting the nationalsecurity and organising the law enforcement at sea.
Launched in early 2017, “Coast guards support fishermen” is a creative and typicalmodel of the force. It aims to concretise the policy of strengthening,renovating and improving the efficiency of mass mobilisation work of the Party,helping promote economic development in island communes and districts and enhancesolidarity between the law enforcement force and people.
It also encourages fishermen tomaintain offshore fishing in traditional fishing grounds, thus contributing to defendingthe national sea and island sovereignty, and ensuring order and safety in thenation’s waters.
Regarding the fight against smugglingand trade fraud at sea, the Coast Guard has razed many cases of drug and cigarettesmuggling, and counterfeit money transporting in large quantities, contributingto ensuring security and order in the national waters.
Since the beginning of this year, the force has dealt with 39 ships, seizing over6.8 million tonnes of coal, more than 10 million litres of petrol and oil,nearly 728,000 tonnes of iron ore, over 26,000 packets of cigarettes, 47.4 kg offirecrackers, and others. -VNA
