Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese expatriates have opened football tournaments within their communities in Malaysia and Laos on the occasion of the 71st National Day (September 2, 1945).
The men’s football tourney in Malaysia kicked off on August 28 at KSL Sport Sri Gombak Futsal Centre in Selangor state.
It attracts six teams from Kuala Lumpur capital and the states of Selangor, Penang and Johor. They are divided into two groups and play in the round-robin format. The two best teams will advance to the final match.
Most of the players are Vietnamese workers in different industries such as electronics, wood processing, and paper and medical equipment manufacturing.
Organisers said the tournament, the second of its kind in Malaysia, aims to serve as a platform for overseas Vietnamese to exchange, enhance solidarity and promote their physical activity.
Meanwhile, the tourney with the same purposes opened in Laos’s Vientiane capital city on August 27. It is the third to be held so far.
Ten teams are divided into two groups and compete in the round-robin format.
The event also looks to raise money to support disadvantaged Vietnamese families and centres for disabled children in Vientiane. Nearly 60 million Kip (over 7,400 USD) in cash and objects was donated on the opening day, organisers said.
The tournament will wrap up on September 24.-VNA
