Foreign geologists have hailed the northernmost mountainous province of Ha Giang for working to implement the Global Geo-parks network’s criteria at its Dong Van Karst Plateau Geo-Park.
Foreign geologists have hailed the northernmost mountainous province ofHa Giang for working to implement the Global Geo-parks network’scriteria at its Dong Van Karst Plateau Geo-Park.

The specialists, from Malaysia, Brazil, France, together with officialsfrom UNESCO Vietnam, the Foreign Ministry, and the Vietnam Institute ofGeosciences and Mineral Resources, carried out an on-the-spotre-evaluation, which is required to make every four years, from August6-9.

They recommended continuing to raise localawareness of valuing and protecting the geo-park, suggesting that theunderway planning of the park should be closely associated with thepreservation of the park’s heritage values.

Dong Vanplateau was recognised as a member of the Global Network of NationalGeoparks in 2010, becoming Vietnam’s first geological park and thesecond in Southeast Asia.

It is 80 percentlimestone and contains the fossils of thousands of species ofprehistoric creatures from 400-600 million years ago.

It is also home to 250,000 people from 17 different ethnic groups, whoboast unique cultures that have been fostered over the centuries.

Recently, 14archaeological sites were excavated in Dong Van, Meo Vac, and Yen Minhdistricts, in Dong Van plateau, revealing hundreds of relics believedto appear in the prehistoric and protohistoric times.-VNA
