Forum talks Japanese technological transfer to Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnam – Japan Policy Research Forum, themed “Engendering Japan-Vietnam Industrial Cooperation through Promoting Technology Transfer”, took place in Hanoi on November 22.

The event was within the framework of cooperation among the Toshiba International Foundation, the Central Institute for Economic Management of Vietnam (CIEM) and the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Public Policy.

CIEM Deputy Director Nguyen Thi Tue Anh said the event offers a chance to look into new economic context affecting the Vietnam – Japan industrial cooperation, asking for changes to further benefits from the global value chain and free trade agreements in the region.

Participants could offer good practices and recommendations to promote the transfer of Japanese technology to Vietnam’s manufacturing sector more effectively, she said.

According to her, stepping up technological transfer from foreign-invested projects is one of the top priorities in Vietnam’s development strategy.

She highlighted the need to build a common action plan to deal with issues regarding promoting Japanese technology transfer to Vietnam, especially in manufacturing.

Dr. Kiyohiro Oki from the University of Tokyo pointed out challenges in the field in manufacturing and processing industry.

He said Japanese investors have seen potentials of the Vietnamese market and hold high expectations about free trade in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Head of the CIEM’s Research Department Nguyen Anh Phuong said promoting industrial linkage between Vietnamese and Japanese enterprises will not only improve the capacity of Vietnamese firms but also be for the economic benefit of Japanese investors in Vietnam./.
