Hanoi (VNA) – A fund raising programme was launched on May 8 in Hanoi by the Vietnam Red Cross Society, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the National Humanitarian Portal 1400 to support the country’s poor fishermen.
The programme aims to call on local and international organisations and individuals to help poor fishermen improve their working conditions, helping them pursue fishing and protecting the country's sea and islands sovereignty.
It is also an activitiy in response to the Humanitarian Month and the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day (May 8).
Donations will be used to buy medicine boxes and provide training on first aid for fishermen in coastal provinces, equip fishing vessels with communication devices to allow fishermen to keep close watch on the weather and natural disaster forecast. The money will also be used to provide free health checkups and medicine for fishermen.
Besides donations in cash and kind, benefactors can donate through a text message campaign by texting BD to 1407 from April 28 to June 26. Each mobile text message will contribute 20,000 VND (0.87 USD) to the fund.
In the previous launch in 2014 and 2016, the programme received more than one million text messages totalled 20 billion VND (877,800 USD) to support the fishermen.
Money can be transferred to the Vietnam Red Cross Society’s account 120 10 0000 36656 at the Vietnam Bank of Investment and Development (BIDV), while donations in kind (telecom and fishing ship equipment) can be sent to the Vietnam Red Cross Society’s headquarters at 82 Nguyen Du Street, Hanoi, or 201 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City. Donations can also be sent to Vietnam Red Cross Society’s offices in 63 provinces and cities.-VNA
