Fundraising app for AO/dioxin victims debuts

A fundraising app for victims of Agent Orange (AO)/dioxin was launched by the Vietnam Association of Victims of AO/dioxin (VAVA) during a ceremony on October 6.

Hanoi (VNA) - A fundraising app forvictims of Agent Orange (AO)/dioxin was launched by the Vietnam Association ofVictims of AO/dioxin (VAVA) during a ceremony on October 6.

VAVA Vice President Nguyen Van Khanh said that fundraisingin recent times has faced many hardships, especially given the impact of theCOVID-19 pandemic.

The VAVAPlus app features the voices of AO/dioxinvictims, honours donors, and connects victims with domestic and foreign supporters.

It also features an e-commerce platform to helpAO/dioxin victims around the country sell products, in a bid to create sustainablelivelihoods.

Some 80 million VND (3,450 USD) was raised at thelaunching ceremony.

The app’s launch also marks 60 years of the AO disasterin Vietnam (August 10, 1961 - 2021), VAVA President Nguyen Van Rinh said.

He called on organisations and individuals at homeand abroad to broaden their support for victims through the freshly-launchedapp.

The US army sprayed some 80 million litres of toxicchemicals, 61 percent of which was Agent Orange and contained 366 kilos ofdioxin, over nearly a quarter of southern Vietnam’s total area from 1961 to 1971.

Figures show that 4.8 million Vietnamese people wereexposed to AO/dioxin and about 3 million people became victims. Tens ofthousands have died while millions of others have suffered from cancer andother incurable diseases as a consequence of exposure. Many of their offspring sufferedbirth deformities./.

Tien Giang steps up efforts to eliminate substandard houses

According to the Tien Giang People’s Committee, 485 homes for policy beneficiaries, families of war martyrs, and low-income households will be supported. Of these, 284 new homes will be built, and 201 existing ones repaired, with a total budget of 24.1 billion VND (about 984,000 USD). As of March 6, construction had started on 166 houses, with 32 already completed.

Bac Giang to eliminate substandard houses by November

Local authorities have identified 795 homes of poor and near-poor households and individuals with recognised service to the nation that qualify for support. Of these, 475 require complete reconstruction and 320 need significant repairs, with estimated costs totaling 39 billion VND (1.53 million USD).

Vietnamese, Chinese cities to build smart border gate pair

They also consented to promote the development of a cross-border economic cooperation zone through sectoral cooperation at Hai Yen industrial park, Van Ninh international port in Mong Cai; a cross-border e-commerce industrial park; and transport connectivity projects between the two cities including the international railway line from Mong Cai to Dongxing, Bac Luan III bridge, and an auxiliary rough steel bridge.
