The news came during an initial meeting to kick off the researchproject AKIZ that aims to promote waste water treatment measures forindustrial zones in the Mekong delta province of Can Tho on March 24.

The province’s Tra Noc Industrial Zone has been chosen to be the firstplace to apply the recommendations on waste water and sludge treatment,reuse and harness to produce energy.

AKIZ is a joint research project by scientists from the Institute ofEnvironmental Engineering and Management at the University of Writtenand seven universities and institutes of Vietnam . It was started lastyear and will be completed by 2014.

During the period, there will be six sub-projects, mainly on studiesand evaluations of waste water’s environmental impacts, measures toabstract toxic substances, harness energy from waste water and applymodern technologies for sludge treatment.

Covering on an area of 290 hectares, the Tra Noc Industrial Zone has atotal of 166 projects and so far 128 of them have been operationalacross the board, from leather and footwear production, veterinarymedicines, construction materials, mechanical engineering,manufacturing, fertilizers, chemicals, food and seafood processingindustries.

Everyday, around 12,500 cu.m of waste water is discharged directly fromthe industrial zone to rivers and canals without being treated,seriously damaging the surrounding environment./.

Vietnam launches 13 mln USD project to phase out ozone-depleting substances

Funded by the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol and implemented through the World Bank (WB) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the project aims to help Vietnam meet its international commitments in managing and phasing out controlled substances. It will run from 2026 to 2031 with a total budget of over 13 million USD.

Solutions sought to restore Mekong Delta wetland ecosystems

Experts at the workshop described wetlands as the “ecological heart” of the Mekong Delta, playing a vital role in water storage and regulation, climate moderation, carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and livelihoods for millions of people through aquaculture, agriculture, and ecotourism. These ecosystems also help reduce disaster risks and enhance climate resilience.
