Recent hailstones accompanied by whirlwinds that began on April 4 have caused serious damage in several districts in the northern mountainous province of Dien Bien . The total cost is estimated at over one billion VND.

A local woman in Nam Tin commune, Nam Po district was injured, while 13 houses collapsed and 260 others were unroofed.

Muong Nhe district was the hardest hit locality with 11 collapsed and 223 unroofed homes and a massive area of destroyed crops, mostly paddy fields and rubber tree farms.

Traffic on National Highway 4H passing the province was blocked for nearly one hour due to a landslide.

The provincial People’s Committee has coordinated with local authorised agencies to calculate the damage and help locals overcome the consequences of the disaster.-VNA
