Hanoi(VNA) – The People’s Committee of Hanoi launched a campaign on November 22 torespond to the national month on HIV/AIDS prevention and control (November10-December 10) and the World AIDS Day (December 1).

According to the HanoiCentre for Preventive Medicine, HIV/AIDS infections have been recorded in alldistricts and almost all communes and wards of the city, mostly in the districtsof Dong Da, Ba Dinh and Hai Ba Trung.

As of the end of 2016,266 out of 100,000 residents in Hanoi were living with HIV/AIDS. In the firstnine months of this year, 982 new cases were detected, including 88 deaths,raising the total infections and deaths to 20,033 and 4,683 respectively. Mostof them are at the age of 25-49 and got the disease via blood transfusion and sexualactivities.

The Asian EpidemicModel predicted that in 2020, the city will have 27,132 people living with HIV,with increased cases transmitted through sexual activities, which alarms the riskof spreading of the virus to the community.

At the launchingceremony, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Le Hong Son called forstronger efforts by local authorities and community to prevent and controlHIV/AIDS and helping victims access support and health care services.

He also stressed theneed for more effective communication to raise public awareness in thefield.-VNA
