Hanoi (VNA) – Hanoi on April 29 decided to grant clemency to 101 prisoners who are serving sentences at the Hanoi police’s detention centres on the occasion of the upcoming 41st anniversary of Liberation of Southern Vietnam and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975).

Accordingly, 34 inmates will be freed ahead of their set release dates while the remaining will have their jail terms shortened by between one and ten months.

Speaking at the ceremony to announce the decision, Senior Lt. Col. Tran Manh Hung from the city’s detention centre No.1 congratulated the pardoned prisoners and encouraged the others to work harder and be disciplined to be eligible for the next screening.

The pardoned prisoners must not repeat committing an offence and do their best to become a good citizen, he added.

The amnesty policy of the Vietnamese Party and State reflects the humanitarian tradition of the Vietnamese nation, which encourages offenders to rehabilitate and become useful member of society.-VNA
