Hanoi (VNA) –As many as 61 political prisoners, including activists and students, in Myanmar were freed on April 9 after their prosecutions had been withdrawn.
The latest release added to the total political prisoners released to 199, including 36 women.
The 61 prisoners were discharged from prisons in Bago, Magway, Yangon, and Mandalay.
Besides, 2,178 other prisoners were granted amnesty on Myanmar’s traditional New Year occasion.
The first release of 138 prisoners on April 8 came after State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi committed that the new government’s priority is to free prisoners through legal channels.
More prisoners are expected to be freed in the following days ahead of Myanmar water festival which falls on April 12.-VNA
