Eleven model citizens and 848 outstanding individuals in the movement of “Good people, good deeds” in Hanoi were honoured at the municipal Patriotism Emulation Congress for 2010-2015 in Hanoi on Aug. 28.
Reviewing the patriotism emulation movement over the past five years, Nguyen The Thao, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee stated that the patriotism emulation movement in Hanoi has developed deep and wide, breathing new life into production and business, helping maintain political security and social order and strengthening people’s trust in the Party, State and authority at all levels.
Over the past five years, the city has 225 individuals awarded with the State’s Labour Order; 385 others received the Prime Minister’s certificates of merit; and 3,288 people were recognised “Good individual”.
As the result of the emulation movement, the city obtained an annual economic growth rate of 10.4 percent, 1.5 times over the nation’s average.
The congress for the first time honoured 11 model citizens, including Prof. Ngo Bao Chau, the first Vietnamese mathematician to win the Fields Medal, and Prof. Vu Khieu, 95.
Addressing the congress, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong praised the achievements of Hanoi in the patriotism emulation movement over the past five years. “In every field there are bright examples of dedication to works, high sense of responsibility and creativity, he said.
On behalf of the Party and State, Chairman Trong handed over the State President’s Golden Star Order to Hanoi for outstanding contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation.
This is the third time Hanoi has been awarded with this high distinction, which is significant at a time when the city is celebrating its 1,000 th birthday./.
