Hanoi to cut back 40,000 trees to cope with typhoons

Nearly 40,000 trees on more than 260 streets would be cut back from now until the end of this year to ensure safety during the rainy season, according to the Hanoi Department of Construction.

Hanoi (VNA) - Nearly 40,000 trees on more than260 streets would be cut back from now until the end of this year toensure safety during the rainy season, according to the Hanoi Departmentof Construction.

The Hanoi Green Trees Park Co Ltd has already lopped more than 12,400trees on 159 streets in the inner city. The company has alsoplanted nearly 14,000 stakes for new trees.

In suburban areas, agencies have cut 17,600 trees on 53 streets.

The department is urging districts and people’s committees to complete theplan to ensure the safety of residents.

The committees will also set up measures to deal with trees that come downduring typhoons.

At present, Hanoi had more than 235,000 trees with diameters of more than20cm, according to the municipal department.-VNA

Binh Thuan ramps up measures to combat IUU fishing

According to the Binh Thuan Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province has completed registration for all “three-no” fishing boats - vessels without registration, licences or monitoring systems - measuring six metres or more. Vietnam, US hold 169th repatriation ceremony for American MIA servicemen

At the ceremony, Vietnam handed over four boxes containing remains recovered during recent joint excavations in Hue city, and Quang Tri and Kon Tum provinces. Preliminary forensic analysis on April 15 suggested the remains may belong to US MIAs and they will be sent to Hawaii for further identification.
