Hanoi,  (VNA) – Hanoi will invest nearly 2 trillion VND (around 85.6 million USD) in 2019 and 2020 to upgrade medical establishments in the city, thus improving medical care quality for residents, Chairman of the capital city’s People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung said.

The Hanoi mayor made the announcement at a meeting on December 18 to review the two-year operation of the hi-tech digestive centre at the Saint Paul General Hospital, which was built following European standards and employs the latest technologies available in Vietnam.

In addition to its modern equipment, a group of leading professors in the gastrointestinal field, led by Dr. Joel Leroy, a top laparoscopic surgeon, offered expert advice and assistance with surgeries at the facility.

Since its inauguration on November 27, 2016, the centre has conducted checkups for more than 45,000 patients and performed more than 4,280 surgeries. The number of patients visiting the centre in 2018 doubled that in 2017.

The centre also coordinated with commune clinics to conduct free-of-charge screening for gastrointestinal cancer for people over 40 in Hanoi.

On the occasion, Dr. Joel Leroy was conferred with the title of Honorary Professor of the Hanoi Medical University for his contribution to the centre.-VNA
