As many as 74 cadres were elected to the Hanoi Party Committee for the 2015-2020 tenure during the first sitting day of the municipality Party Organisation’s 16th Congress on November 1.

According to Deputy Head of the municipal Party Committee’s Commission for Popularisation and Education Nguyen Van Phong, besides the 74 members, the Secretary of the municipal Party Committee will be appointed by the Party Politburo following the 12th National Congress. Due to the special status of Hanoi as the capital city, the position will be held by a politburo member.

After the voting, the new Committee convened its first meeting to elect the deputy secretaries, members of its Standing Board, members of the inspection board and the chairman of the inspection board.

In the afternoon, the Congress heard four reports, focusing on how to hasten industrialisation and modernisation, promote sustainable socio-economic development, make the Party stronger, and ensure social order and security. The reports also discussed upholding cultural traditions with the aim of creating a modern, prosperous city.

Hanoi’s economy has grown remarkably over the past five years. Gross domestic product (GDP) increased 9.23 percent on average – 1.58 times higher than that of the country.

The city’s gross regional domestic product (GRDP) for 2015 stands at about 27.6 billion USD. Income per capita is approximately 3,600 USD, 1.8 times higher than in 2010.

Services, industry-construction and agriculture make up 54 percent, 41.5 percent and 4.5 percent of the economy, respectively.

The State collected about 714.5 trillion VND (32 billion USD) over the year, a yearly increase of 7.1 percent.

Hanoi is leading the nation in the number of new rural communes. By the end of the year, the city will have 179 that fulfill all criteria on building new-style rural areas. These will account for one fifth of the total new rural communes in the country.

Hanoi and the northern province of Hung Yen are the last localities holding their Party Organisations’ Congresses for the 2015-2020 tenure.

Hanoi’s 16th Party Congress will run until November 3, while Hung Yen’s 18th Party Congress is scheduled to last through November 2.-VNA
