Hau Giang, German agency join hands in climate change adaptation

Hau Giang (VNA) – Authorities of the Mekong Deltaprovince of Hau Giang joined a working session with a delegation from the GermanAgency for International Cooperation (GIZ) on May 14 to discuss an urban floodproofing and drainage plan designed to adapt to climate change (FPP).

At the event, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’sCommittee Nguyen Van Tuan said although the Mekong Delta holds huge potential,the region still faces obstacles in infrastructure, regional connectivity andespecially the impact of climate change.

Hau Giang is among the hardest-hit, so it has focused onbuilding infrastructure for regional connectivity and urban drainage, theofficial added.
Tuan said that the province has reached an agreement with the GIZ on the implementation of the plan and assigned the Department ofConstruction, the Department of Planning and Investment and other agencies toteam up with the German agency.
He also suggested that the GIZ build pilot models when carryingout projects in the province to expand to other localities in the region.
This new plan consists of three parts with the first oneon State management that will continue supporting regional connectivity, thesecond on coordination mechanisms for the region, and the third on inter-provincialinfrastructure, said Director Tim McGrath.
It will be carried out from 2021-25 at a total cost of 13-15million EUR (14-16 million USD).
Studies on the coordination mechanisms for the region andsub-regions are underway, along with those on regional planning, socio-economicdevelopment and climate change adaptation, he noted./.

Three new plant species discovered in Nui Chua National Park

The newly discovered species are shrub-like smaller trees with floriferous branchlets called Sam cuong dai (Memecylon longipedunculatum), Diep ha chau Nui Chua (Nymphanthus adenophorus) and Long muc Nui Chua (Wrightia nuichuaensis). Their discovery was officially published in Phytotaxa, a leading international journal on plant taxonomy and biodiversity, on January 19, 2025.
