HCM City hosts furniture-handicrafts expo

Over 300 woodwork and handicraft businesses from both in and outside of the country are displaying their products at the International Furniture and Handicrafts Fair (EXPO 2010) which opened in Ho Chi Minh City on October 6.

The event, jointly held by HCMCity’s Department of Industry and Trade and the Trade PromotionDepartment under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, is to boost exportsof domestic wooden and handicraft products.

With700 stands, the five-day fair will bring domestic woodwork andhandicraft businesses together, especially small and medium-sizedenterprises, who have little opportunity to take part in overseasexhibitions, with their international partners.

Aspart of the event, an online expo will be set up to help businessespromote their trademarks by posting their information and products,saving transaction times and costs.

So far, over800 companies have registered 7,000 products on the online expo, anincrease of 21 percent in the number of businesses and 40 percent inproducts compared with 2009.

In addition, there will be seminars for Vietnamese businesses and importers held by Turkey and Japan .

Over the past year, the International Furniture and Handicrafts Fairhas attracted a large number of participants, helping to raise theindustry’s export turnover from 590 million USD in 2001 to 2 billion USDin 2005 and 3 billion USD in 2009. This year’s figure is expected toreach almost 4.5 billion USD./.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has outlined three scenarios for 2027–2030. Under the high-growth scenario, international arrivals would rise 15–18 percent annually to reach 45–50 million, while domestic tourism would reach around 160 million trips. Total tourism revenue is projected at 80–90 billion USD.

Vietnam's tourism sector faces labour shortage

A 2026 survey by Hoteljob.vn found that nearly 90% of tourism businesses planned to recruit. In Ho Chi Minh City alone, 89.7% of businesses were hiring, while 71.8% said recruitment was difficult or very difficult. The biggest shortages were among frontline workers, particularly in housekeeping, engineering, food service, front-office operations, and kitchens.
