HCM City (VNA) –
As of April 1, Ho Chi Minh City’s population was nearly 9 million, being the most populous locality of Vietnam, announced vice head of the municipal Statistics Office Vo Thanh Sang on October 11.

At a conference to review HCM City’s population and housing census in 2019, the official revealed that the city’s population surged 1.8 million people from the 2009 figure.

At present, the city’s rates of men and women are 48.7 percent and 51.3 percent, respectively. Its average population growth rate hit 2.28 percent in the 10-year time until 2019.

Of the city’s districts, Tan Binh records the highest population of 784,000 people, while Can Gio sees the lowest of nearly 72,000.

The city’s per capital land area stands at 19.4 square metres. Notably, up to 99.3 percent out of the 2.5 million families in the city are residing in stable houses.

The census looked into the general situation of population, migration status, academic attainment levels, residency and people’s basic living conditions.

HCM City is the first locality of the country to apply information technology to collect information in all steps of the census, as it was carried out with the help of computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) technique and online surveys.

It is designed to support research and analyse population growth and housing issues to evaluate the implementation of socio-economic development plans in the 2011-2015 and policy making in the 2016-2020 period./.
