HCM City (VNA) – The Road-Railway Traffic Police Division (PC08) under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Police on January 15 launched a breath-testing campaign on drivers in 24 districts of the city.


Lieut. Col. Huynh Trung Phong, head of the division, said drivers will be tested for alcohol and stimulants before, during, and after the Tet (Lunar New Year) festival, which lasts from February 2-10.

Accordingly, the testing will be carried out between 18:00 and 2:00 of the next day from now until February 16, targeting drivers of cars, buses, trucks, and motorbikes, he said.

The country’s largest economic hub reported 3,643 traffic accidents in 2018 that killed 702 people and injured 2,517 others, down 245 cases, three deaths and 440 injured as compared with 2017.

According to the National Committee for Traffic Safety, up to 18,736 traffic accidents occurred across the country last year, killing 8,248 and injuring 14,802 others. The figures represented year-on-year decreases of 1,348 cases, 33 deaths, and 2,238 injured people, respectively.-VNA
