Hue to celebrate Environment Day

Vietnam plans to celebrate this year's World Environment Day, themed"Think.Eat.Save", in Hue City , the central province of ThuaThien-Hue on June 5.

According to the United NationsEnvironment Programme, the theme is intended to encourage people tobecome more aware of the environmental impact of the food choices theymake and empower them to make informed decisions.

Thetheme has a direct bearing on the daily life of everyone in the world,said Tran Phong, Director of the Centre for Environment Training andCommunication under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment,at a press briefing on May 15.

A series of events will also be organised in Thua Thien-Hue province from June 1-5.

This includes a national meeting with the participation of Party andState leaders and nearly 300 other delegations at Nghinh Luong Pavilion,on the bank of the Huong (Perfume) River in Hue City.

Another event is the biennial Vietnam Environmental Awards 2013, whichhonours 50 individuals and organisations who demonstrated outstandingefforts in protecting natural resources and the environment.

Deputy Minister Bui Cach Tuyen said that the ministry has ordered 63provinces and cities to celebrate the day by helping local residentssave food.

Vietnam began to celebrate the World Environment Day in 1982.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), every year1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. At the same time, one in everyseven people in the world goes to bed hungry and more than 20,000children under the age of five die daily from hunger.

FAOestimates that a third of global food production is either wasted orlost. Food waste is an enormous drain on natural resources andcontributes to negative environmental impacts.-VNA

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.

U Minh Thuong National Park reopens for tourists as fire risks ease

According to Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment Le Huu Toan, a fire prevention and control plan has been in place since the dry season began, including round-the-clock patrols and rapid-response teams to snuff out fires before they could spread.

Hundreds of trees planted in Cuc Phuong National Park as part of Forestival

Renowned artists including Ha Anh Tuan, Den Vau, and Phan Manh Quynh, along with many directors and attendees, took part in planting hundreds of rare tree species such as mun (Diospyros mun) and cho chi (Parashorea chinensis) in the Thung Bong area of the Cuc Phuong National Park, contributing to forest ecosystem restoration.
