Jakarta (VNA) – The Indonesian police have arrested 41 suspected Islamic rebels on Java island as authorities are tightening anti-terrorism regulations after the deadly Jakarta attack in January.

Liliek Darmanto, police spokesman of Central Java province, said that the provincial anti-terrorism force on February 20 arrested 36 men who were attending military-style training at a jihadi camp on Sumbing Mount.

Air rifles, knives, jihadi books and flags were seized during the raid.

Investigations are underway for the men’s possible links to Islamic radicalism.

One day earlier, five men were captured in East Java province’s Malang city.

Indonesia’s government has submitted to parliament a new anti-terrorism law that would enable authorities to hold suspects involved in radicalism and extremism for up to six months.

According to several foreign press agencies, most of the detained were freed on the morning of February 21 after 24-hour questioning.

Indonesia is now home to more than 225 million Islamists.-VNA
