Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) on July 30 said the country is strengthening research cooperation with Japan on carbon neutrality.

According to BRIN Head Laksana Tri Handoko, carbon neutrality has become Indonesia’s focus and Japan has a lot of technology related to this field. The agency hopes that the cooperation will soon reach standards about environment. Currently, experts of the two sides are negotiating directions to replace coal fuel with local biomass.

Handoko said the use of local biomass as a new renewable energy source is strategic in achieving carbon neutrality. Indonesia is also considering nuclear power plants for large-scale energy sources in the future.

He explained that the BRIN has also started cooperating with industrial partners in Japan in developing biomass for aircraft fuel based on Indonesian local biomass, such as coconut and other plants. It is expected that production may start in 2025.

Handoko revealed that the cooperation programme with Japan includes support programmes for training human resources in Indonesia, including the geothermal development sector. He emphasised that Indonesia's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 through the decarbonisation process can be realised through the collaboration between Indonesia and Japan./.
