Indonesia will change its lifestyle paradigm of consumption to empower productive sectors to boost its economy, President Joko Widodo remarked at the annual People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) on August 14.

The Indonesian government will focus on infrastructure development such as highways, railway networks, water reservoirs and power plants; improve social security; and pay attention to healthcare, social welfare and support for the disabled, he said.

The president believed that Indonesia has huge potential to become a prosperous nation thanks to its large population, growing middle class, democratic policies, a moderate Muslim society and GDP estimated at about 10 trillion USD.

He also acknowledged many persistent issues, including fluctuating food prices, income gaps, and corruption and low law enforcement levels.

The State leader noted that the recent Cabinet reshuffle aims to improve government performance and enhance social welfare.-VNA
