Flooding in Jakarta (Source: AFP) Hanoi (VNA) – The Indonesia disaster mitigation agency said on April 26that heavy rain has pounded the capital city of Jakarta, causing the Ciliwungriver to burst its banks, prompting flash flooding in at least 17 areas, andforcing hundreds of people to evacuate.
Dozens ofresidents in parts of the capital's east, where flooding occurs frequentlyduring rainy season, were forced to wade through streets filled with water 1mdeep.
Images fromsome parts of the city showed people taking refuge on higher grounds with theirbelongings, while the authorities tried to reach hard-hit areas with rubberboats.
Publickitchens have been set up in the east of Jakarta to distribute aid to peopleaffected by the flooding.
The agencywarned that water at several dams is still at a worrying level.
There are noimmediate reports of deaths or injuries, it said.
The localmedia reported on April 24 that at least four people were killed and two othersreported missing after heavy rain triggered flash floods in central Java.
Last month,at least 104 people died and over 10,000 others were forced to evacuate afterflash flood and landslides tore through Papua in eastern Indonesia.
