Jakarta (VNA) – The Indonesian Government has warned its citizens against flu as it can lead to fatal complications such as pneumonia, as the government learns that many Indonesian people do not seek medical help until the disease becomes worse.
Amidst the season with high risks of both flu and meningitis, the Indonesia’s Health Ministry advised the community to take preventive measures such as vaccination.
Health experts also recommended simple measures such as washing hands with soap, covering nose and mouth while coughing and sneezing, using face mask and pasteurizing utensils before using, and avoiding direct contact with infected people.
The Indonesian Government was also urged to promote the vaccination for children against the two diseases.
According to the WHO, 290,000-650,000 people in the world die of respiratory diseases rooting from flu every year.
A report by Indonesia on severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) from 2013 to 2016 showed that 14 percent of SARI cases were negative to flu viruses. The number of SARI cases related to flu in the country is about 13-19 out of 100,000 people each year.
According to a research by the US Centre for Disease Control Prevention in Yogyakarta city in North Sumatra and Balikpapan city in East Kalimantan of Indonesia, the ratio of the country’s children infected with flu is high. Many other reports also showed that children are most vulnerable to complications of flu, thus flu prevention among children should be prioritised in efforts to protect public health.-VNA
