Hanoi (VNA) – A riot and deadly two-day standoff by terrorism detainees in a police detention center near the Indonesian capital ended on early May 10 after a police assault on the cellblock led to a mass surrender by those holed up inside, officials said.
Commissioner General Syafrudin, deputy chief of the Indonesian National Police, told reporters that the operation ended at 7:15 am, with six deaths including five police officers and one prisoner. Another officer was held captive by the inmates as a hostage and was rescued
A total of 156 detainees surrendered and will be transferred to another prison in the region, he said.
According to Muhammad Iqbal, a national police spokesman, the riot occurred on May 8 at the detention center at the elite police force's headquarters in Depok of West Java province in Jakarta's southern outskirts.
It happened only a few days after the arrest of three suspected terrorists who allegedly attempted to attack the elite police force's headquarters in Depok and many other detention centres in the same area.
The Indonesian authorities rejected information that the self-claimed Islamic State (IS) itself claimed to carry out the riot, which was posted on Amaq News Agency - the television channel that IS used to cover its attacks and spread its messages.-VNA
