Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia’s Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has said that the increase in the export of farm commodities, including mangosteen which climbed up three times, has contributed to the local agricultural sector’s achievements.

In 2014, the GDP in the agricultural sector stood at only 900 trillion rupiah (64.3 billion USD). But it rose to 1,460 trillion rupiah (104.3 billion USD) in 2018.

In terms of rice production, Indonesia produced only 21 million tonnes of rice in 1984 and the figure rose to 33 million tonnes, ensuring the domestic rice demand. However, the country imports rice every year for the reserve fund or crop failures.

Currently, the agricultural sector is one of the biggest contributors to the GDP. The rise in the GDP is inseparable from the programme and effort of the government and President Joko Widodo, who wants to see farmers lead a prosperous life and their income continuing to increase. - VNA
