International workshop focuses on water, health

Scientists from Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Laos joined together in an workshop held in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue from December 15-16 to discuss issues related to water supply in urban areas and the effects of water quality on health.

The event, organised by the HueUniversity of Sciences in conjunction with Tokyo University and severalother Japanese universities and research institutes, heard 50 reports onecological health and the assessment of health risks related to thewater environment in urban areas.

The reportsintroduced new methods in environmental impact assessment, and studiesand projects on the environment and health implemented in severalcountries in the region.

The workshop providedparticipants with a good chanc e to share information and look forcooperation opportunities in the fields of urban sanitation, environmentand climate change, while fostering cooperation among universities andresearch institutes of Japan and Vietnam.

Japan is one of the countries providing support for Thua Thien–Hue in the field of urban water supply.

Japan’s Yokohama Waterworks Bureau worked with Thua Thien-HueConstruction and Water Supply Company (HueWACO) to carry out a 600,000USD project to improve water supply management in the locality.

Since 2002, the Yokohama Waterworks Bureau has dispatched experts andhelped the locality train personnel in this sector while implementingvarious water supply activities in the central province.-VNA

Vietnam launches 13 mln USD project to phase out ozone-depleting substances

Funded by the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol and implemented through the World Bank (WB) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the project aims to help Vietnam meet its international commitments in managing and phasing out controlled substances. It will run from 2026 to 2031 with a total budget of over 13 million USD.

Solutions sought to restore Mekong Delta wetland ecosystems

Experts at the workshop described wetlands as the “ecological heart” of the Mekong Delta, playing a vital role in water storage and regulation, climate moderation, carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and livelihoods for millions of people through aquaculture, agriculture, and ecotourism. These ecosystems also help reduce disaster risks and enhance climate resilience.

Vietnam highlights forests’ role in sustainable growth on International Day of Forests

Vietnam, Denmark cooperate to pilot circular food model

Under the “Green Hero Solution” project, organic food waste will be collected from partner organisations and businesses and processed into compost. The compost will then be used at two Food Bank community gardens, where fresh vegetables will be grown to support disadvantaged households.
