As many as 100 domestic and foreign experts in agriculture sector are gathering at a conference in Hanoi to seek measures to promoting initiatives on conservation agriculture in Southeast Asia.
The third International Conference on Conservation Agriculture in Southeast Asia, which started on December 10, is jointly held by Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Australian and French Embassies in Vietnam.
Conservation agriculture has become a main trend in many countries over the past 15 years. However, it is mainly practised in countries with developed agriculture such as the US, India, Brazil and Argentina, with more than 100 million ha of land cultivated following this model.
A network of conservation agriculture was established in Southeast Asia in 2009, but the region, with its agriculture on small and micro scales, needs more diverse models that require low investment.
The challenge for Southeast Asia is to develop an environmentally-friendly agriculture which relies on sustainable ecology systems and is adaptive to climate change, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Bui Ba Bong.
Participants at the five-day event will evaluate socio-economic impacts of conservation agriculture options, and the conditions, strategies, opportunities as well as challenges to the development of conservation agriculture in the region.-VNA
