Int’l Red Cross to continue support to Vietnam

A representative from the International Committee of the Red Cross in Asia-Pacific has pledged that the committee will continue assisting the Vietnamese Government and army in popularising the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and helping the country overcome war aftermaths.

Duringa December 5 meeting with Deputy Defence Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen. LeHuu Duc in Hanoi, Beat Schweizer said the committee will also work withVietnam in projects to raise public awareness on unexploded ordnance.

Itwill share experience in military medicine and humanitarian rescue asVietnam joins United Nations peacekeeping operations, he added.

Schweizeralso said he hopes to receive support and cooperation from the DefenceMinistry of Vietnam during his term from 2013-2015.

For his part, Duc expressed his delight that the Vietnamese Government and army share a close relationship with the committee.

Throughthe Vietnam Red Cross, the International Committee of the Red Cross hassupported Vietnam in organising training courses on the IHL formilitary officers while publishing documents and holding conferences andseminars on the law.

On the other hand, Vietnam hasalso actively responded to programmes launched by the committee such asthose on public healthcare, humanitarian support in remote andmountainous areas, search for martyrs’ remains, assisting Agent Orangevictims, and blood donation, he added.-VNA

Residents stopped work and gathered quietly along both sides of the road leading to the cemetery. Veterans stood at attention and saluted, elderly people clasped their hands in reverence, and children held up the national flag.

Memorial service held for 731 fallen soldiers in Ho Chi Minh City

From June 23 to October 5, Team K74 and other forces recovered 731 sets of martyrs’ remains from the park. Biological samples and DNA samples collected from relatives of unidentified fallen soldiers are being analysed and stored in the national gene bank to support identification efforts.
