Japan underscored its commitment in a statement released on July 10 after the 5th meeting between Japanese Foreign Minister and his counterparts from the Mekong countries including Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.
Accordingly, Japan will help Vietnam implement a variety of construction projects such as the Cai-Mep Thi Vai International Airport , urban railway network and upgrading other roads and bridges.
These infrastructure projects are to enhance connectivity between Japan and Vietnam in particular and Japan with other countries in Mekong region in general.
Beyond infrastructural projects, educational development also featured in its partnership with Vietnam. It noted, for example, that work was on-going for the Hoa Lac Science and Technology City. It also raised the possibility of co-operation in the establishment of high-quality universities in Vietnam.
The 5th Mekong – Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting took place at the sidelines of the 45th ASEAN Ministerial meeting and the 19th ASEAN Regional Forum./.
