Japan remains important market for Vietnam's tourism

Vietnam is a popular tourist destination for Japanese holiday-makers as it attracts approximately 1 million arrivals from the Asian nation each year, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT).

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam is a popular tourist destinationfor Japanese holiday-makers as it attracts approximately 1 million arrivals fromthe Asian nation each year, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports andTourism’s Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT).

Fifty years after establishing diplomatic relations (September21, 1973 - 2023), Vietnam and Japan have witnessed numerous accomplishments inacross fields, including tourism cooperation.
Japan has always been one of the key markets for Vietnam'stourism industry in recent years.

During the 2015 - 2019 period, the number of Japanese tourists visiting Vietnamincreased by 1.4 times to 952,000 in 2019, with an annual average growth rateof 9.1%. In 2022, Vietnam welcomed only 128,764 Japanese visitors, much lower than before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the figure strongly rebounded in 2023.

Japan ranked fourth among the top 10 tourism markets of Vietnam in the lastfive months, with 204,000 visiting the Southeast Asian nation in theperiod.

Japanese tourists are interested in tours to experience local cultureand explore UNESCO World Heritage, and resort-style vacations in Vietnam. Hanoi, Quang Ninh, NinhBinh, Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, Nha Trang, the Mekong Delta region, and Ho Chi MinhCity are the most attractive for Japanese visitors.  

Vietnam has paid special attention to promoting the image of itscountry and people to Japanese people. A wide range of programmes to popularise tourismdestinations of Vietnam and the country's cultural festivals have been organised inmany cities of Japan. Vietnamese travel agencies have also participated in manyinternational tourism fairs in Japan.

A Vietnam-Japan tourism cooperation promotion programme will be organised in Japan's Osaka on July 2 -6, aiming to strengthen connection and cooperation, contributingto tightening the relationship between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Japan has also become a favourite destination for Vietnamesetravelers with its attractive and famous destinations. From Hanoi, HCM City andDa Nang, tourists can easily fly to major cities in Japan such as Tokyo, Kyoto,Nagoya, Osaka, and Kobe.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan welcomed about 500,000Vietnamese visitors per year. In 2022, as many as 284,000 Vietnamese touriststraveled to Japan, accounting for 7.4% of the total international visitors tothe Asian country. In April 2023, the number of Vietnamese tourists visiting Japanreached 55,200, down 0.2% year-on-year, but up 85.2% compared to 2022. It isforecast that Japan will continue to be a popular destination for Vietnamesetravelers in the future.

The Japan National TourismOrganisation (JNTO) in Vietnam launched atourism promotion campaign in Vietnam in November 2022. As part of thecampaign, the agency released video clips promoting Japanesetourism with the participation of Nhi Thang Family, including renownedVietnamese singer Dong Nhi, businessman Ong Cao Thang and their daughter Winnie. The music productscontribute to widely introducing Japanese tourism attractions to Vietnamesepeople./.

Air travel demand holds steady during Hung Kings, April 30-May 1 holidays

Da Nang welcomes first flight from Vladivostok

According to the plan, the programme will run from April 16 to October 23, connecting eight cities across Russia, the CIS, and Belarus with Da Nang. The total number of visitors is expected to reach approximately 25,500, with a maximum frequency of 36 flights per month, equivalent to around 4,800 passengers monthly.

Administrative expansion unlocks new momentum for tourism development

Nguyen Thi Hoai, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Tuyen Quang, said the expansion of administrative boundaries has opened up new development space for the province, with key tourism products including cultural-historical tourism, ethnic cultural experiences, community-based tourism linked to scenic sites, spiritual tourism, and other distinctive experiential offerings.

Vietnam’s tourism defies fuel price shock with record Q1 “hat-trick”

According to data released by the National Statistics Office, foreign arrivals in March reached nearly 2.1 million, up 1.3% year-on-year. In total, Vietnam welcomed an estimated 6.76 million foreign tourists in the first quarter, a more than 12% jump from the same period in 2025 and the highest Q1 figure ever recorded.

Technology powers tourism growth in mountainous province

Last year, Tuyen Quang welcomed over 3.9 million visitors, and is aiming to attract around 4.1 million arrivals, including around 600,000 foreigners, this year. Tourism continues to be identified as a key economic sector, with development oriented toward sustainability, green growth, and enhanced competitiveness through digitalisation.

VITM 2026 boosts tourism demand ahead of peak season

Cultural heritage drives sustainable tourism growth in Ninh Binh

In the first two months of 2026, Ninh Binh welcomed over 5.4 million visitors, up 9.9% year-on-year, generating nearly 5.84 trillion VND (221 million USD) in tourism revenue, up 15.9%. During the 2026 Lunar New Year holiday alone, the province received 2.38 million visitors, an 81.4% increase from the previous year, ranking second nationwide.

In 2025, Vietnam’s tourism sector recorded its highest-ever number of visitors, welcoming more than 21.5 million international arrivals, up more than 20% from 2024, and serving over 135.5 million domestic travellers. The sector has become a bright spot of the economy, with Vietnam ranking among the world’s fastest-growing tourism destinations.
