JICA funds project to improve VN’s capacity for water environment management

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide technical assistance worth 914,000 USD to a project to improve Vietnam’s capacity for water environment management.

Hanoi (VNA) - The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) willprovide technical assistance worth 914,000 USD to a project to improveVietnam’s capacity for water environment management.

Under the project, which was launched by the VietnamEnvironment Administration (VEA), JICA and Japanese-based Optex Company Limitedon October 8, simple water monitoring devices will be installed at 54 points inprovinces in the Cau River basin which are Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, BacGiang, Vinh Phuc and Hai Duong provinces and Hanoi city. The project aims toassess those devices’ efficiency, suitability for the local environment andtheir satisfaction of techniques and measurement regulations in Vietnam.

The project will be carried from October 2019 to September 2020.

VEA Deputy Director Nguyen Hung Thinh said that environment monitoring has beenmaintained in Vietnam since 1994, and it has played an increasing role inenvironmental protection and management in the country.

He laid stress on the importance to enhance watermonitoring activities in river basins as socio-economic development is exertinggreat pressure on the water resources.

Daisuke Okabe, a representative from the JapaneseEmbassy in Vietnam, said that the Cau River basin is suffering from seriouspollution, and the project’s equipment, which is able to collect the monitoringdata easily at low cost, is expected to assist with the control of waterquality in the basin.

Meanwhile, Koji Takauchi, a senior consultant at JICA,believed the project will solve problems of water quality in Vietnam’s riverbasins based on products that have been successfully applied in Japan./.

Emission standards for motorcycles to be issued in July

Under the draft, motorcycles produced before 2008 will be subject to the lowest level of inspection standards, level 1, while those manufactured from 2008 onwards will be assessed to a higher standard. Similar rules will also apply to motorised vehicles, with level 1 for those manufactured before 2016.

Vietnam consults stakeholders on climate change scenarios

Lang Son becomes Vietnam’s 4th global geopark

Lang Son Global Geopark spans over 4,842 square kilometres, roughly 58% of the province, and is home to around 627,500 people. It features a rich blend of geological wonders and cultural heritage, including stunning caves and sinkholes such as Nguom Mooc Cave, Tham Lum and Ung Roac. Its biodiversity is also protected within the Huu Lien Nature Reserve.
