Khanh Hoa (VNA) – The General Directorate of Fisheries and the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers have co-trained local fishermen in the central coastal province of Khanh Hoa on protecting dolphins during fishing tuna.

The course on December 14 in Nha Trang city provided fishermen with the US, Vietnam and international regulations related to seafood processing and exploitation, in which dolphins are excluded from the fishing list.

For the regulations issued by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Earth Island Institute (ELI), tuna exporters must sign papers confirming no dolphins are caught, killed or harmed in tuna nets.

They are also required to finish the training course on protecting dolphins.

It is one of compulsory criteria for Vietnam’s tuna products to be imported in to the US’ market.

Apart from Khanh Hoa, similar courses took place in Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Binh Thuan and Ba Ria – Vung Tau.

Khanh Hoa’s tuna yield has hit over 26,600 tonnes since the beginning of this year.
