Khmer people enjoy traditional Chol Chnam Thmay Tet

The southern province of Vinh Long, home to 24,000 Khmer people, is carrying out various activities to help the community enjoy the traditional Chol Chnam Thmay New Year.

Thirteendelegations from the provincial authorities, Fatherland Front and socialassociations visited, presented gifts and expressed greetings to Khmermonks and nuns, families receiving social welfare and the poor.

On April 13 and 14, Vinh Long will organise the 4 th culture andsports festival for Khmer people in Tan My commune, Tra On district.Many activities will take place, including a Khmer singing and dancingfestival, an exhibition on the movement to build new rural areas, atraditional Khmer cuisine festival, and various traditional folk games.

On April 8, a delegation from the Southwest SteeringCommittee and Can Tho City visited and presented New Year gifts tomonks and nuns in Can Tho City, the Khmer Theravada Buddhism Institute,and Munirensay, Pothi Somron and Sanvor temples. The delegation alsopresented gifts to 15 poor households in Ninh Kieu and O Mon districts.

Offering greetings to Khmer people in the city,deputy head of the aforementioned committee Nguyen Phong Quang stressedthat this year, his committee and local authorities will continue tosolidify policies aimed at improving the lives of Khmer people,especially the poor.

The same day, Bac Lieu provinceheld a gathering with more than 450 Khmer Buddhist monks, retired andincumbent officials and soldiers.

Addressing thecongregation, Khmer representatives expressed their gratitude to theprovincial authorities and Party. They stressed that they will continueimplementing the Party and State’s policies and laws.

According to Vice Chairwoman of the Bac Lieu provincial People’sCommittee Le Thi Ai Nam, Khmer people have made great contributionsto the province’s achievements. Last year, the number of poor Khmerhouseholds reduced by more than 2 percent and all Khmer households gotaccess to clean water.-VNA
