Kien Giang urged to fully tap potential for stronger development

Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong has asked authorities of the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang to fully tap its potential and strengths, especially in agriculture and tourism, in order to well perform tasks and orientations set for the locality in 2019.

Hanoi (VNA) - Party GeneralSecretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong has asked authorities of the MekongDelta province of Kien Giang to fully tap its potential and strengths,especially in agriculture and tourism, in order to well perform tasks andorientations set for the locality in 2019.

During a meeting with leaders of theprovince on April 14, Trong requested representatives from relevant ministries,sectors and agencies to discuss and clarify prominent achievements made by KienGiang, and analyse potential and advantages as well as development  orientations, towards fostering the province’srapid and stronger development in the coming time.

He highlighted the need to pay attention topromoting comprehensive development, saying that the socio-economic developmentshould be the centre, the Party building should be the key task and cultureshould be the spiritual foundation of the society.

The local authorities were also requested to focus on maintaining defence andsecurity and having good relations with neighbouring countries that share theborderline with Kien Giang.

The top leader asked for strategic orientations, master plans and specific plansfor each fields, saying that these are necessary to devise polices oninvestment attraction, goods consumption, infrastructure development, and humanresources training.

Reports at the meeting showed that the provincial Party Committee alwaysattached importance to political and ideological education for officials andparty members, and strictly implementing resolutions and directives of the PartyCentral Committee.

The province’s economy has recorded stable growth with its GDP hitting over62.3 trillion VND (2.68 billion USD) in 2018, 1.23 times higher than that of2015. The average GDP growth in 2016-2018 stood at 7.13 percent, while percapita income increased from 1,664 USD in 2015 to 2,094 USD in 2018. Attentionwas also paid to the new-style rural areas development movement, helping bring betterliving conditions of local people.

Kien Giang has completed the restructuring of State-owned enterprises, while ithas seen strong development of private firms. The province is home to 8,770businesses, up 1.23 times compared to the figure in 2015, with total capital ofover 91.7 trillion VND (3.95 billion USD).

The sea-based economy accounts for 73.82 percent of the province's GDP. Theservice sector grows at an average rate of 11 percent per annum; and its exportturnover surges 17.61 percent per year.

Tourism has become a spearhead economic sector of the province, with its revenuereaching over 11 trillion VND (474.5 million USD) a year, yearly averageincrease of 23.9 percent.

Provincial leaders asked the Politburo for direction on the establishment ofPhu Quoc city and resolutions on a number of specific policies for Phu Quoc, aswell as approve the proposal to set up Tho Chau island district.

Trong noted recommendations of the local authorities, saying that it isnecessary to have master plans and resources balance and detail examinationsfor these proposals.

Previously, on April 13, the Party and State leader visited and worked at anumber of industrial and agricultural production establishments in Kien Giang.

During working sessions with enterprises’ representatives, he urged the firmsto work hard in order to take full advantage of potential and strengths to furtherboost development, reminding them to enhance application of hi-technologies in theirproduction and business activities.-VNA
