Korean President Moon Jae-in (R) and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad (Photo: Yonhap) Seoul (VNA) - KoreanPresident Moon Jae-in and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad agreed onNovember 28 to elevate relations between the two countries to a "strategicpartnership" next year.
During their talks at Cheong Wa Dae inSeoul, the two leaders noted that bilateral ties have deepened in various fields,such as cutting-edge industries, energy, arms projects, health care and theenvironment, Yonhap News Agency reported.
In a post-summit press release,Moon's office said the leaders pointed out that the bilateral relations havespread beyond trade and investment to "forward-looking" partnerships.
In that regard, they "reached adeal in principle" to upgrade the Republic of Korea (RoK)-Malaysia ties toa strategic partnership," according to Cheong Wa Dae.
The leaders shared the view that itis important to introduce a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) to accelerate"economic solidarity" between the two sides. They agreed to continueefforts toward signing a "high-level, mutually beneficial" deal onthe basis of the relevant negotiations held so far.
Moon requested Malaysia's unswervingsupport and cooperation in connection with the Korea peace process.
In response, Mahathir reaffirmed hissupport for Seoul's initiative to transform the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)bisecting Korea into an international peace zone.
Following the summit, Moon andMahathir attended the signing ceremony for four memorandums of understanding(MOUs) on promoting cooperation on information and communications technology,digital government, health care and medical science, and water and sewagemanagement./.
