Korean shipbuilder launches first corvette for Philippine Navy

Seoul (VNA) - HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), a shipbuilding company of the Republic of Korea (RoK), has launched its first corvette for the Philippine Navy at its shipyard in Ulsan city.

BRP Miguel Malvar, named after a Filipino independence hero, measures 118.4m in length and 14.9m in width, and has a cruising speed of about 28km per hour. It is equipped with anti-ship missiles, a vertical launching system, and an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar.

The vessel is expected to be delivered to the Philippine Navy next year. The second corvette will be launched in December 2024 and delivered also next year.

The Philippine Government has ordered 10 vessels from HHI as part of its programme to modernise and enhance the country's navy capabilities./.
