Lam Dong (VNA) –
The first batch ofLaba banana -  a specialty of Vietnam’s Central Highland province of LamDong – has been exported to Japan.

The 30 tonnes of banana were shipped by the PhuSon Laba trade service cooperative in Lam Ha district through a contract signedwith Viet Banana Investment Joint Stock Company in 2017, chairman of thecooperative’s board of directors Nguyen Tan Choi said on August 27.

The banana must be grown according to Japanesetechnical procedures, he said, adding that the Japanese partner had sent its expertsto inspect the quality, pesticide residues, and harvesting and packagingprocedures for the fruit before allowing the shipment of fruit.

After the first batch, the Japanese side orders3-4 containers of Laba banana each month, with 20 tonnes of fruit in eachcontainer. This is a good sign affirmingthe brand and quality of Lam Dong’s fruit specialty.

The cooperative is growing Laba bananas onnearly 200 hectares in Lam Ha district and Da K’Nang commune (Dam Rongdistrict). Around 100 hectares have entered harvesting time.

With stable prices of 8,000-9,000 VND per kgunder the export contract to Japan, one hectare of Laba bananas is estimated tobring about 500-600 million VND (21,527 – 25,832 USD) in profit for farmersannually.

Laba banana is favoured by tourists thanks toits special taste and flavour. Previously, it was among local specialtyofferings to King Bao Dai (1926-1945).-VNA
