Landslide leaves one dead in northern Lao Cai province

A serious landslide left one dead in Ban Ho commune in Sa Pa township of the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai on August 19 morning, reported the provincial Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control, and Search and Rescue.

Lao Cai (VNA) – A serious landslide left one deadin Ban Ho commune in Sa Pa township of the northern mountainous province of LaoCai on August 19 morning, reported the provincial Steering Committee forDisaster Prevention and Control, and Search and Rescue.

From August 18 evening to August 19 morning, heavy rainfallscaused landslides in many areas.

Local authorities said 40 houses, three schools and threeirrigation works were damaged, over 35ha of rice were inundated and twoelectric poles collapsed.

The total damage is estimated at about 5 billion VND(217,000 USD)./.

Nghe An residents voluntarily hand over rare pangolins for conservation

On May 11, the Quy Chau Forest Protection Department, along with local police and authorities, took in a critically endangered pangolin, handed over by a resident. The animal was discovered a day earlier by Thai Doan Tuan, from Viet Huong village in Quy Chau commune, after it wandered into his garden. Recognising it as a protected Sunda pangolin, he contacted authorities for assistance.

Pangolins, scaly mammals capable of curling into a ball for self-defence, are classified as critically endangered and are strictly protected under both Vietnamese and international law.
