Vientiane (VNA) – The Vientiane Administration Office has issued an urgent warning in response to rising water levels in the Mekong River, which poses a risk of breaching levees and causing localised flooding in low-lying areas and potentially widespread inundation in the Lao capital city.
The warning, issued on September 12, notes that continuous rain from September 12 to 16 is expected to cause a sudden rise in the Mekong River's water levels. Forecasts indicate that the water level will reach 12.54 meters on September 14, 13.41 meters on September 15, and 13.85 meters on September 16. The danger level is set at 12.50 meters.
According to the Mekong River Commission, as of 9:30 a.m. on September 13, water levels at Luang Prabang, Chiangkhan, Vientiane, and Nong Khai stations had reached hazardous levels.
To prevent potential loss of life and property, the office has urged all government officials, military personnel, police, enterprises, companies, hospitals, schools, airports, as well as residents and foreigners living and operating in the capital to remain vigilant and fully prepared to cope with possible flooding. It has advised relocating vehicles, belongings, livestock, and valuable assets to higher, safer ground, while continuously monitoring weather updates and hourly river level reports.
Additionally, Vientiane authorities have prepared comprehensive plans to respond effectively to any unexpected flood situations./.
