A commemorative meeting was held by the Lao Ministry of National Defence on April 30 in the country’s capital, Vientiane, to mark the 40th anniversary of Vietnam’s Southern Liberation and National Reunification.
The event was attended by Deputy Defence Minister, Sen. Lieut. Gen. Chansamon Channhalat, Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos, Nguyen Manh Hung, and representatives from the Vietnamese overseas and business community in Laos.
During the event, the General discussed the historic victory, describing it as an event that shook the world. He said that it is not only a milestone in the history of Vietnam, as the triumph inspired the revolutions of the Lao and Cambodian people and was supported by peace-lovers around the world.
He hailed the sound leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the late President Ho Chi Minh and the solidarity of the Vietnamese people for their role in the 1975 victory.
The Party, the State and the people of Laos pledge to continue their comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam, protecting and consolidating their special friendship, the Lao deputy minister proclaimed.
The anniversary has been marked across Laos, with a number of documentary films screened exploring the war, the victory and the aftermath. The Lao media has widely covered the events of April 1975 and hailed the achievements Vietnam has made in the four decades since.
On the other side of the world, the anniversary has also been marked. On April 28, the Vietnamese Embassy in Mexico and the Mexico-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentarian Group held a celebratory meeting.
Addressing the event, Mexican Labour Party (PT) General Secretary and President of the Parliamentarian Group, Alberto Anaya Gutiérrez, hailed the significance of triumph forty years ago. He said Vietnam set a shining example with its determination to fight for independence, inspiring other countries around the world.
He wished yet greater success for the Vietnamese people in 2015 and and wished the nation well in its drive to become a modern and industrialised country by 2020.-VNA
