Many members of the National Assembly Standing Committee expressed concerns that corruption remains serious and complicated despite recent efforts, at the committee’s ongoing 21 st session in Hanoi on September 18.
As the committee scrutinized the Government’s report on the fight against corruption, most opinions shared the view that the detection of and dealing with corruptive acts have failed to match the urgency of the situation.
According to the report, presented by Government Inspector General Huynh Phong Tranh, the inspection sector uncovered 73 corruption cases so far this year involving 80 suspects and 117 billion VND (5.5 million USD).
Meanwhile, the investigative police handled 371 cases with 847 defendants who caused a loss of over 9.2 trillion VND (43.8 million USD).
According to the NA’s Justice Committee, measures against corruption have brought limited effect.
Added to this, it usually takes a long time to handle corruption cases, and the trial of a number of cases even caused mistrust among the public.
Chairman of the NA’s Law Committee Phan Trung Ly, meanwhile, hailed the media’s role in combating corruption, saying that most cases have been brought to light thanks to them.
Deputy Director of the Supreme People’s Procuracy Nguyen Hai Phong proposed establishing an independent agency specialising in investigating and handling corruption crime similar to the model in many countries in the world to ensure that the fight against corruption will become more effective.-VNA
