Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang has ordered the inspection of level crossing nationwide in a bid to ensure railway traffic safety and minimize accidents involving trains.

The country now has roughly 6,000 level crossings.

The decision came following a crash between a train carrying hundreds of passengers and a heavy goods vehicle which happened on July 10 in northern Hai Duong province’s Thanh Ha district.

The accident, flipped the lorry over and derailed three carriages, brought traffic to a standstill on the Hanoi-Hai Phong line.

The train driver, who was the only injured, had his sight limited because of a row of trees and this is blamed as the cause of the accident.

Minister Thang has also asked for the installation of automatic warning devices and more guards to be located at the level crossings to manage local people and traffic when trains were due.-VNA
