Lights off in Vietnam during Earth Hour

Vietnam joined many other countries around the world during the 2016 Earth Hour late on March 19 with the symbolic action of turning off unnecessary electrical devices for one hour.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam joined many other countries around the world during the 2016 Earth Hour late on March 19 with the symbolic action of turning off unnecessary electrical devices for one hour.

The country saved 451,000 kWh of electricity, equivalent to 731.5 million VND (over 32.810 USD), from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 19 when people nationwide were encouraged to turn of unnecessary electrical devices, the Electricity of Vietnam Group’s National Load Dispatch Centre said.

In Hanoi, lights were switched off around the iconic Hoan Kiem Lake, and other well-known destinations like the Ly Thai To flower garden, the Hanoi Opera House and along streets.

In the central province of Quang Nam, residents and tourists floated candle lanterns on rivers in Hoi An and engaged in cultural activities during the electricity-free hour.

This is the eighth year Vietnam participated in the global Earth Hour campaign, which was launched by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) to raise public awareness about efficient energy use in the age of climate change.

Northern region to experience cold spell

Floods affect over 16,000 homes, nearly 25,000ha of crops

The floods submerged and damaged 22,499ha of rice, crops and vegetables, along with 2,172ha of other crops. A further 1,175.62ha of aquaculture areas were affected. Some 1,999 metres of irrigation canals were eroded or damaged, while 15 schools were flooded.

Heavy rains cause widespread damage in Phu Tho, Thanh Hoa

Prolonged heavy rains from September 13–17 have caused flooding and landslides, damaging homes, crops, roads and infrastructure in Phu Tho and Thanh Hoa provinces, with local authorities mobilising forces for emergency response.

Ninh Binh establishes Kim Bang white-rumped langur conservation area

Covering a total area of 3,182ha, the conservation area comprises 3,016.81ha of natural forest, 64.25ha of plantation forest and 100.94ha of land without forest, with no water surface area. It is located in the Ly Thuong Kiet, Tam Chuc and Nguyen Uy wards of Ninh Binh province.
