As many as 28,750 rural labourers in the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho are expected to be trained and employed from 2016-2020 as part of a project introduced at a conference in the city on August 27.

Vocational training courses will be conducted under the project, targeting 5,000 agricultural labourers and more than 23,700 in other fields.

Vice Chairman of the city’s People’s Committee Le Van Tam urged relevant bodies to focus on market-relevant training to fully tap the potential of each area.

He also stressed the need to expand effective training models in a number of occupations, such as welding in O Mon district, bonsai and decorative tree growing in Phong Dien district and household tailoring in Cai Rang district.

Connections among localities, training institutions, job placement centres and enterprises should be strengthened to ensure effective vocational training, he added.

Preferential loans should also be available to rural workers, especially social welfare beneficiaries and impoverished or ethnic minority households to help them escape poverty sustainably.

Most participants at the event suggested training durations should be increased for a number of hi-tech and complicated occupations such as graphic design, mechanics, and phone repairs as well as increasing allowances for trainees.-VNA
