The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development(MARD) made the request in a document sent to Chairpersons of People’s Committees of the 28 coastalcities and provinces, regarding the realisation of the Prime Minister’sconclusions on combating IUU fishing and removing the European Commission (EC)’s“yellow card.”
Under the document, the MARD, the standing body ofthe National Steering Committee on IUU Fishing Prevention and Control, askedthe local leaders to put a focus on instructing competent departments, agencies and forces todrastically and effectively implement the PM’s directions.
Heads of Party Committees and administrations at all levels should hold responsibility for the implementation of anti-IUU fishing tasks,according to the document.
The ministry also urged the localities to investmore in fisheries infrastructure, ensure adequate personnel and equipment for fishery management agencies, and seriously observe regulations on monitoring fishingboats and catches at ports and handling violations.
The localities also need to devise more supportmechanisms and policies towards fishermen, especially those affected by theCOVID-19 pandemic, helping to stabilise their livelihoods.
Fishermen should be prioritised in vaccination tomake them feel secure in fishing and ensure the growth of the fisheries sector,the ministry said./.
