Long An intensifies cross-border A/H7N9 avian flu prevention

The Department of Animal Health and Livestock Production of the Mekong Delta province of Long An has increased preventive measures against A/H7N9 and other virus strains entering its border gates with Cambodia, said Phan Ngoc Chau, head of the department.

Long An (VNA) – The Department of Animal Healthand Livestock Production of the Mekong Delta province of Long An has increased preventivemeasures against A/H7N9 and other virus strains entering its border gates withCambodia, said Phan Ngoc Chau, head of the department.

The agency will closely supervise cross-border poultry transportand trading, including the offering of live fowls and poultry products of organisationsand individuals in border areas.

It has sent one million vaccines against avian flu to borderdistricts while coordinating with local authorities in monitoring andimplementing vaccination at small-scale breeding households.

The border gates are guarded around the clock to oversee poultry trading andpeople crossing the border.

Long An province has about 8 million fowls, 70 percent of which are chicken. Mostfarms in the locality have vaccinated their poultry to prevent the diseases.

For small-scale breeding households, the department has beencooperating with localities in implementing State-funded vaccination programmes.-VNA

Accordingly, provincial and municipal health departments are required to direct hospitals, centres for disease control and health care facilities to urgently develop plans and carry out medicine procurement to ensure sufficient supply, absolutely avoiding shortages. Nipah virus infection is designated a Group A infectious disease, with reported fatality rates of between 40 and 75%. At present, no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment is available. The virus is mainly transmitted from animals to humans or through contact with contaminated food and objects, and can also spread between people via direct contact with bodily fluids and secretions of infected patients.
