Long An province moves to adapt to climate change

A project on climate change adaptation in Vam Co River’s basin, with a total investment of more than 365,000 Euro coming mostly from the Dutch government, has been launched in districts along the Vam Co River in the southern province of Long An.
A project on climate change adaptation in Vam Co River’s basin, with atotal investment of more than 365,000 Euro coming mostly from the Dutchgovernment, has been launched in districts along the Vam Co River in thesouthern province of Long An.

The aims of the project include assessing current and future impacts ofclimate conditions, while evaluating the effectiveness of measures tocoping with risks of harsh climate conditions such as floods, floodtides and sea levels rise.

The project also focuseson assessing losses resulting from salt marsh expansion, promoting theengagement of local people in the planning process and sharingexperience as well as drafting strategies to enable access to researchresults.

Huynh Thi Thep, Vice Director of theDepartment of Science and Technology of Long An, said the project willinitially benefit the four riverside districts of Can Duoc, Can Giuoc,Chau Thanh and Tan Tru and is expected to expand to other districts ofLong An province.

The project is scheduled to be completed by late 2012./.

Vietnam launches 13 mln USD project to phase out ozone-depleting substances

Funded by the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol and implemented through the World Bank (WB) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the project aims to help Vietnam meet its international commitments in managing and phasing out controlled substances. It will run from 2026 to 2031 with a total budget of over 13 million USD.

Solutions sought to restore Mekong Delta wetland ecosystems

Experts at the workshop described wetlands as the “ecological heart” of the Mekong Delta, playing a vital role in water storage and regulation, climate moderation, carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and livelihoods for millions of people through aquaculture, agriculture, and ecotourism. These ecosystems also help reduce disaster risks and enhance climate resilience.
