Malaysia sets up special committee to review security laws

The Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs has set up a special committee to review existing laws, especially those related to national security, Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - The Malaysian Ministry of HomeAffairs has set up a special committee to review existing laws, especiallythose related to national security, Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

Muhyiddin said the committee, which was established last week, ischaired by the ministry’s Secretary-General Datuk Seri Alwi Ibrahim.

The committee will review the laws that come under the Ministry ofHome Affairs such as the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA),the Prevention of Terrorism Act 2015 (POTA) and the Prevention of Crime Act1959 (POCA).

On May 22, Muhyiddin was reported as saying that the Ministry ofHome Affairs would review seven laws related to national security that werefound to be no longer suitable today.

The laws are the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, theSedition Act 1948, mandatory death sentence, the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012,POCA, SOSMA and POTA.

The reviewing of the laws was one of the matters pertaining tosecurity issues contained in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) manifesto for the 14th generalelection.

The PH coalition of Mahathir Mohamad, who servedas the Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1981 to 2003, won the 14th generalelection by obtaining 113 of the 222 seats in the parliament’s lower house

With this result, the PH is eligible to form anew government. Mahathir, 92, was officially sworn in as the Prime Minister onMay 10, becoming the oldest government leader in the world.-VNA
